Samsung, maker of the most popular Android smartphones in the world, has unveiled its new long-awaited flagship – the Galaxy S5. The device offers improved specifications as well as refined design and user interface.
As you’d expect from a superphone, the Galaxy S5 comes with cutting-edge technology packed in compact, dust- and waterproof body. It is equipped with a gorgeous 5.1-inch 1080p SuperAMOLED display, quad-core processor clocked at 2.5 GHz, 2GB of RAM, LTE support, and large 2800 mAh battery. As for imaging, there’s a 16 megapixel camera with built-in LED flash, HDR, image stabilization, and geo-tagging. It is capable of shooting video at a whooping 4K resolution too.
If you’re a fan of top-notch security, you’ll be happy to know that the Galaxy S5 was equipped with a sensitive fingerprint scanner located in the home button just below the screen. A vertical swipe is enough for you to unlock the phone or confirm a secured payment (a fruit of collaboration between Samsung and PayPal).
Software-wise, Samsung has introduced plenty of new features and changes. Particularly noticeable are fitness capabilities that will track your lifestyle as well as check your heart rate. Combined with weatherproof casing and good battery life, this feature makes the Galaxy S5 the perfect phone for runners and athletes. The Galaxy S5 is running Android 4.4.2 KitKat with the refreshed TouchWiz UI. Samsung has redesigned many elements of the interface, including icons, bars, and buttons. Software feels lighter, cleaner, and more consistent now.
The Galaxy S5 looks extremely similar to the Galaxy S4 from the front, but if you turn it around, you’ll see that Samsung has replaced the predecessor’s glossy plastic back with a patterned soft-touch finish. As a result, the phone is more comfortable to hold and use. It may not be the most beautiful design we’ve seen, but it most certainly doesn’t feel as tacky as the faux leather that’s been in Samsung’s favour in the past few months.
Samsung is not ready to talk pricing yet, but since the Galaxy S5 is scheduled to launch globally in April, we expect it to emerge in the next couple of weeks.
