Google Takeout

Google takeout is Google's official way for its users to download their data in order to see what data of theirs is uploaded and stored by Google services. Currently the following services are supported:

  • Google+
  • Google Buzz
  • Contacts and Circles
  • Picasa Web Albums
  • Google Voice

Here's a quick start guide to the service:

  1. Login to Google Takeout
  2. Presented before you is a screen with the Google products from which your data can be downloaded - this is the 'all of your data tab'. To download all of your data hit 'Creative Archive'.
  3. If you only want to download information for certain apps, select the 'Choose Services' tab. Select as many or as few of the services as you like (If it's selected you will see a percentage graph). Hit the 'Create Archive' button to generate your custom download.
  4. You will be directed to the downloads tab.
  5. On the Downloads tab you can view your past downloads, useful if you have created custom downloads in the past and you want to save a little time. Press the blue download button next to the corresponding download you want.

Google takeaway is certainly a nice, fairly easy to use service. It's a definite improvement of other social networks, such as Facebook, where you must wait for an undefined amount of time for your download to process - as seen in this article.
