BMW Launches Wireless Charging For Electric Cars

BMW i, a brand under BMW that focuses on the company’s sustainability and environmental concepts, has created a wireless charging station for plug-in hybrid vehicles.

BMW Wireless Charging is a ‘GroundPad’ that can be installed on your driveway or in your garage that connects to a ‘ChargePad’ that fits to the underside of your vehicle, and charges it.

“The contactless transfer of energy between the GroundPad and CarPad is conducted over a distance of around eight centimetres. The GroundPad generates a magnetic field. In the CarPad an electric current is induced, which then charges the high-voltage battery,” explained BMW inside a press release.

With 3.2 kW of charging power, the station takes about three-and-a-half hours to fully refuel the batteries of a BMW ‘530e iPerformance’ model. Production will begin in July, and will become available in Germany, followed by the UK, the US, Japan, and China. Alternatively, it can be ordered now as a leasing option for the BMW 530e iPerformance.
