Google Pixel 2: Everything You Need To Know

So Google’s Pixel 2 event was yesterday, and they released some pretty interesting new tech. Obviously, the focus of the event was on the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL smartphones, so let’s jump into how they’ve changed from last year and what Google has added to their flagship device.

  • The Pixel 2 has a 5″ OLED display, just like last year, whereas the XL 2 has moved up to a 6″ OLED display.
  • Both phones have Snapdragon 835 processors, 4GB of RAM, and an option for 64GB or 128GB of storage.
  • They each have front-facing stereo speakers.
  • The Pixel 2 has a 2700mAh battery, and the XL 2 has a 3520mAh battery.
  • Google has finally abandoned the headphone jack!
  • Google has implemented Active Edge, which means you can now squeeze the phone to trigger certain actions, by default it activates the Google Assistant.
  • The biggest improvement seems to be the camera this year, both phones have a 12.2-megapixel rear camera with an f/1.8 aperture and optical image stabilization, and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera.
  • The camera uses ‘dual-pixel sensor’, which literally divides every pixel into two.
  • Because of this Google now has Portrait Mode on the Pixel, even though it only has one camera on the back.
  • Google is adding its own version of the iPhone’s Live Photos, called Motion Photos.
  • All Pixel owners will get to store all of their photos and videos in original quality, forever, on Google Photos.
  • Just like Apple, Google went further with Augmented Reality this year, including the ability to add AR stickers and 3D characters, while also announcing that they’re partnering with some big companies to keep the AR experience alive.
  • Pixel phones will also be the first to get Google Lens, a technology that is basically Google Search bu for your eyes, you’ll be able to point your camera at anything and Google will pull up everything it can about it.
  • The Pixel 2 will come in three colours: white, black, and “kinda blue.” It’s priced at $649 for 64GB of storage and $749 for 128GB.
  • The Pixel 2 XL will be offered in just two colours, black and white. It’ll start at $849 for 64GB and go up to $949 for 128GB. 
  • Both will be shipped by October 17th.
