Smartphones are getting closer and closer to replacing our computers. They’re always on, always available and load apps much faster than your average program loads on a standard computer. From the most basic tasks to time management to advanced automation, your phone or tablet may save you a lot of time and effort. With the right set of productivity apps, you can easily write a report, access and edit documents stored on your office computer, create a handy to-do list, or review a PDF file. Since there are quite a few of them available on Android, for your convenience we’ve compiled a handy list of the best ones. Enjoy!

Note: Apps are in no particular order.

There are quite a few powerful office suites for Android and the Google-Owned QuickOffice is among the best. The app allows you to create and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint files as well as view PDF documents. Thanks to tight integration with Google services, Quick Office can also access files stored in the cloud to open them or share via Google Drive or e-mail message.

All that is wrapped in a well-made interface that follows Android’s design language and is pretty smooth. What’s more, the app is completely free.

JotterPad X

JotterPad X was designed for students, writers, and developers as an advanced, yet easy to use writing tool. The app sports a good-looking interface that delivers distraction-free writing experience. There are no unnecessary buttons or bars, just the content. Once you’re done writing, you can save the document in a folder (notebook, if you will), or export it as PDF.

Other features include versions control, MarkDown support, keyboard shortcuts, Dropbox integration, various writing modes, and word counter.

qPDF Viewer

If you’ve installed QuickOffice or Adobe’s official Reader app, qPDF Viewer may seem like a third wheel, but it definitely is not. In our tests, qPDF Viewer displayed the most potential. It’s a reliable app for viewing PDF files. It performs very well, loads the files quickly, and comes with a bunch a features such as text reflow. Additionally, it allows you to add annotations, comments, notes, and images.

In a situation, when you’ll have to open and edit an important document, qPDF Viewer will prove useful.

Google Keep

There are tens of great note taking applications available in the Play Store, but Google Keep is our favourite. Developed by Google themselves, Keep allows you to write down your thoughts on the go as well as save long fragments of text, voice notes, lists, and images. Moreover, it is extremely smooth and has a colorful interface.

All notes saved and edited in Keep can be accessed later from the web or with the official Google Chrome app.

Evernote is more than just a note taking app. It’s a feature-rich service available on every mobile and computer operating system you can imagine. Evernote has gained popularity thanks reliable synchronization between all connectved devices as well as plenty of integrated third-party tools and applications.

Evernote, like most modern note taking apps, gives you an ability to save and share notes, images, and links, but it also allows you to work on files together with a friend and prevent unauthorized access to the app by setting PIN code. is a widely popular to-do app available on both Android and iOS. It has a distinctive and sleek interface that doesn’t draw attention from the app’s relatively advanced features. Those include an advanced speech-to-text engine that quickly and accurately turns your words into text, which allows for hands free note taking on the go or in a car.

Moreover, syncs the notes between your phone or tablet or another phone. It’s very intuitive and easy to use, which make it perfect app for those who are just beginning their adventure with Android.

Just like the aforementioned, Tasks is a to-do app. However, it represents a different approach as its interface was design to match stock Android’s look. It feels like a default system app, which – given that the company behind Tasks was recently acquired by Google – is reasonable.

Tasks is very simple and easy to navigate. It uses Google’s Tasks service to sync data between your phone, tablet, Chromebook, or any other device with access to Google services. It has a handy and good-looking widget, too.

On iOS, there is a number of great apps for students, but on Android it still feels like a niche. However, the situation is getting better quickly as apps like Timetable are being released into the Play Store.

Timetable is a comprehensive application that creates easy to read timetables. It can also save homework assignments as well as remind about upcoming exams.

It has a neatly designed interface and thanks to a pair of customizable widgets, you can see what classes and tasks for the day with just a glance at the home screen.

If you’re using a Nexus or Google Play Edition device, you are already familiar with stock Android’s calendar application. It’s quite good, but the built upon it Caledar++ app is much better. It brings several improvements over the original app, for example built-in to-do list with support for Google Tasks service, beautiful home screen widget and various reminders and alerts. Calendar++ is a great time tracker, which will replace several other apps and fit the system’s visual style.

Brought by the creators of to-do app, Cal offers a really good-looking interface paired with all features you’d expect from a high-end calendar application. Its visual style is different from vanilla Android’s look and feel, but it is what makes Cal stand out. The interface is bright and colorful, with plenty of smooth animations, transitions, and cheerful icons. There’s also support for birthdays (with gift suggestions from Amazon or and integration as well as synchronization with both Google Calendar and Microsoft Exchange.

Cal is a mixture of great design and features and it’s free, so why don’t you give it a shot?
