iOS' homescreen lacks massively compared to Android and Windows Phone. All it is is a grid of icons, that's it. On Android you can have widgets which feed you with information and enable you take actions right on the homescreen. Windows Phone isn't as advanced but the tiles are live and animate when an action happens.
iOS' screen has stayed the same ever since the launch of the iPhone. I never used to use widgets when I was on Android so it doesn't bother me too much on iPhone. But many others heavily depend on widgets and have Android phones for that reason.
Max Rudberg has come up with a very quick concept video showing how widgets could be easily implemented into iOS. It's very well done and could easily work if implemented.
