Sparrow Acquired by Google

Well that was unexpected. Sparrow, the popular email client for the Apple family of products, including the Mac and iPhone has just been acquired by Google.

Here is the statement taken directly from their site:

We're excited to announce that Sparrow has been acquired by Google!

We care a lot about how people communicate, and we did our best to provide you with the most intuitive and pleasurable mailing experience.
Now we're joining the Gmail team to accomplish a bigger vision — one that we think we can better achieve with Google.
We’d like to extend a special thanks to all of our users who have supported us, advised us, given us priceless feedback and allowed us to build a better mail application. While we’ll be working on new things at Google, we will continue to make Sparrow available and provide support for our users.
We had an amazing ride and can't thank you enough.
Full speed ahead!

Sparrow was mainly Apple driven and had no plans to release any apps for any other platforms. The iPad version of the app was also in the making, with a teaser a few weeks back.

This is a great move by Google. They will undoubtedly mix together the style of Sparrow into Gmail and most probably make them into one product. This may also lead to Sparrow apps heading over to the Android platform. But Google already have their own Gmail app, so they may just update the Gmail app.

No news on what's happening to the current Sparrow apps for Mac and iPhone but hopefully they won't be discontinued. Also I'm hoping they follow through on the iPad version. Guess we just have to wait and see what happens.

Myself and others who use Sparrow have been receiving emails saying the following: We will continue to make available our existing products, and we will provide support and critical updates to our users. However, as we’ll be busy with new projects at Google, we do not plan to release new features for the Sparrow apps. So it looks like this is bad for those who spent their cash on Sparrow apps, now to find out that no updates or new features will be added.
