One thing I which Apple failed to do was enable actual notification icons in the status bar. Android has had the notification system since its birth, only recently did iOS copy the Android notification system - not a bad thing though, Apple are keeping up with the times.
As you can see I have a message icon and a silent ringer icon in the status bar, next to the clock. iOS doesn't automatically implement this. I got used to having sms, mail and missed calls notifications in my status on Android so I needed something which did the same for iOS. OpenNotifier does that.
OpenNotifier enables you to add status bar notifications to any app you wish. I only needed it for mail, sms and missed calls so I assigned the icons to those apps. I can now see if I have an important notification waiting for me to view.
You can find OpenNotifier in the ModMyi repo. You should have the source automatically if you have jailbroken, if you haven't got it, here is the source link - http://apt.modmyi.com
