Official confirmation has just been received explaining Samsung and Google's Unpacked Even will not be held on the 11th of October as planned.
Kim Titus of Samsung provided this statement:
Samsung and Google have decided to postpone the Samsung Mobile Unpacked event during the CTIA in San Diego, previously scheduled for Oct. 11. Under the current circumstances, both parties have agreed that this is not the appropriate time for the announcement of a new product. We would ask for the understanding of our clients and media for any inconvenience caused. We will announce a new date and venue in due course.
This may put off interested buyers of the Nexus Prime which is to be officially announced at the event. Ice Cream Sandwich, Google's newest version of the Android mobile operating system, was also due to be released on the 11th. Updates to Google Music, Books and Movies are expected to be announced at the belated event along with some updates to the Android browser, making it truly Chrome.
There could be many reasons for the event being cancelled; new bugs in software suddenly found, troubles with the event location, presentations or presenters unable to attend or possibly even a revision of Ice Cream Sandwich in the light of the iPhone 4S announcement by Apple. However, another reason it may have been postponed is to pay respect to Steve Jobs' recent death.
