Battlefield 360 – Simulator

A team of technology experts from ‘Europe’ have come up with what may be the greatest FPS simulator of all time. A fully immersive 360 degree simulator that makes you feel like you’re in the heat of the battle.

Centred around the worlds first omnidirectional treadmill (designed by Swedish company MSE Weibull), the player has to physically walk to move the character on screen. As the character shifts around the environment the projectors will always aim towards the players direction of travel; a clever way to avoid projecting the (non-existent) scene behind the player.

Likewise, the gun is handled similarly, having the player hold a physical, wireless, gun instead of a standard controller.

Other enhancements include the damage system, in which when you receive damage from on screen bullets, 1 of 12 paintball markers will physically hit you in the corresponding area. Ambient lighting is provided by an LED system and even a Kinect hack has been involved (although as of yet I’m not entirely sure how).

Below is a teaser of ‘The Gadget Show’ where the simulator will first be tested running a early release of Battlefield 3. The episode airs in the UK on 24th October 2011 at 8pm on Channel 5.
