The rumour round the mill is that HTC might be ditching Android use their own OS in their smartphone devices.
Here is what Cher Wang, the chairwoman of the company, has been telling reporters.
We have given it thought and we have discussed it internally, but we will not do it on impulse. We can use any OS we want. We are able to make things different from our rivals on the second or third layer of a platform. Our strength lies in understanding an OS, but it does not mean that we have to produce an OS.
Cher Wang seems to be referring to the companies popular HTC Sense overlay on it's devices. Maybe wanting to develop it further and put it over an OS such as WebOS.
I personally think this will be a bad move by HTC if they do ditch Android. Android was the platform which put them solidly into the smartphone market, making HTC a common smartphone vendor in many countries. They built the first Android phone, the G1 and then carried on bringing very popular Android smartphones which dominated some markets all around the world.
Ditching the OS which made them grow at phenomenal rate will undoubtedly bring stock prices down and in turn produce unhappy investors.
