Nothing online is safe – that’s a fact. Once you put something on the internet, it will be taken, it’s a side effect of the internet. But if you’re a photographer who would like to earn some cash from your photos being used online, Imgembed is a great service.

Imgembed allows creators to upload their images and benefit from others using them. Creators can track where their images are being used, gain recognition for their images and make money from their images based on how many views they receive.

It allows users to use images with permission, use some images for free, pay for some other images and will help them cut down on hosting costs and resources because the images will be hosted on Imgembed.

The service is a win-win for both content creators and users who are looking for images to use on their website.

The site itself is completely free to use and users only pay when they want to use an image without any attribution. Creators only pay 30% of their earnings. It’s literally as simple as that.

Google Now is a great feature of Android Ice Cream Sandwich, allowing users to carry out search and other activities completely by voice. It came over to iOS where it was also a great hit.

Google showed off a type of Google Now for Chrome last week at their I/O event, they’re calling it Conversational Search. This allows you to search by using more natural sentences and words – instead of a standard set of words. Well Conversational Search has just come over to Chrome in the latest update.

How To Get Conversational Search

You’ll need the latest version of Chrome, v27. To see if you have that version you’ll need to head to “Settings/Help”. There you should see the version you have. My version number was 27.0.1453.93. If you don’t see that try and manually force an update.

Then head over to the Google homepage, hit the microphone icon and you should see a large red microphone appear. Start voice searching away!

I was having a bit of trouble with it though. I keep getting “No Internet Connection” when trying to search, but there were some times it was working. So it may just be that it’s not fully ready yet, but it is partly working.

If you’re a regular user of Twitter you’ll have definitely noticed Twitter cards, like the one above. When you click on a tweet, it’ll show more information about that tweet such as its title, short excerpt, an image, Twitter account and source link.

To achieve what you see above is pretty simple when it comes to WordPress. Plugins have you sorted.

How To Integrate Twitter Cards Into WordPress

1. First you’ll need to install the JM Twitter Cards plugin.

2. Go into Settings/JM Twitter Cards. And follow what the plugin tells you to enter.

3. Head over to the Twitter cards validator. Put in your URL to check everything is working properly, it’ll then ask you to approve your URL.

4. You should then start seeing Twitter cards for your content.

If the validator tool shows your site isn’t valid just give it a few hours. Once you’ve asked to get validated Twitter says it’ll take weeks to get accepted, when in reality you should actually be accepted right away – I was anyway.

Android users will already know of MIUI and it’s popularity on the OS. I was in the Android scene when MIUI launched and it was a huge hit. It brought a lot of style to the then bland Android OS. Thankfully Android has come along way since then.

MIUI has now come over to iOS in the form of a Winterboard theme. And as you’d expect, it looks absolutely stunning. All the default icons for iOS have been changed to now have a minimalistic flat style – it’s brilliant and different from what others have to offer.

It doesn’t just offer icons. It also offers customised versions of the iPod app, the SMS app, phone app and a lot of the general UI, such as the buttons, transitions…etc.

This has got to be one of the most beautiful themes available for iPhone right now, it’s just sublime.

Now you probably want to get this theme on your iPhone, here’s how.

How To Install MIUI Theme on iOS

MIUI is optimised for the iPhone 5. It will run on any other devices which run iOS 6. It does not support iPad.

To get started you’ll need to add another repo to cydia – http://cydia.myrepospace.com/imiui – go into the repo and just install it. Then go to Winterboard and enable the theme.
You can also manually install the theme if you wish – full theme zip.

How To Get MIUI Lockscreen

If you’d like to have the MIUI lockscreen like I have (check out the pics above), you’ll need to do some more tweaking which can be a bit overwhelming to beginners. So please follow this if you’re comfortable with playing around with root files on your device.

1. First you’ll need to download JellyLock (BETA) from Cydia, it’s free.
2. Download the JellyLock customisation file. Unzip it.
3. You’ll need to then access your device root files and navigate to ‘/Library/Application Support/JellyLock/Contents/Resources’.
4. Go back to your unzipped JellyLock zip. Go to ‘themes/default’. Take all the files in there and copy to the folder you just navigated to on your device.
5. Enjoy!

The best thing about MIUI? It’s completely free.
I found a little app, only 80kb, which sits in the taskbar. From there, you can quickly change screen orientation for however many displays you have hooked up to your Mac. It’s a lot quicker than having to keep going into the system preferences.

A hidden gem in Photoshop which isn’t actually shown anywhere on the GUI is the ability to paste a layer style without it overwriting the layers current style. It’s in the form of a hotkey – ctrl + alt + cmd + V

A question which flies around a lot is “what controller is best for use on a Mac?”. The answer to that is actually very simple – a PS3 DualShock 3 controller.

Though Mac’s are awful at hardcore gaming, you’re better off with a PC. But a controller can be great for playing those games you’ll find in the Mac App Store such as the classic GTA San Andreas or Call of Duty Black Ops.

How To Set Up PS3 DualShock 3 Controller With Mac

Your Mac will of course need to have Bluetooth and must be switched on.

Connect your Controller to your Mac via USB cable.

Hover over the Bluetooth icon in your taskbar and go to “Set Up Bluetooth Device”.

You should find the controller listed there, click on it.

It then may ask for a passcode, you can just put anything in there and it should connect.

If your controller doesn’t work following the procedure above, follow steps 1 and 2, then remove the USB cable and it may then connect.

Google has an amazing collection of fonts in its free to use web directory. They can be downloaded to your computer or used in a web design project. The purpose of it is to give people a lot more choice than the standard set of fonts you get with your machine.

If you’re a huge Google fonts user like myself you’ll find this tool very useful.

Skyfonts is a small program that allows you to download and sync fonts to your computer. They have partnered with Google to offer the fonts to anyone and everyone for free. They’re ideal for print use but can of course be used when mocking up websites in Photoshop. If a font is updated, that update is automatically synced.

Once you’ve installed the program you’ll want to add fonts. To add fonts to your collection you have to go to the Skyfonts site, hit the “Browse Google Fonts” button and you’ll be given a very good font preview box. The fonts are shown beautifully, unlike Google’s own site.

You can then quickly browse through the fonts and add the ones which pick your fancy.

The service is completely free to use and I highly recommend it to anyone who’s into their typography.

Wireless charging is become the next best thing when it comes to mobile devices, with devices like the Nokia 920 and Samsung Galaxy S4 having the feature.

The great thing about wireless chargers is that they can be hidden and can work through materials. So one Nokia 920 owner took his wireless charging to another level by implementing into his night stand. Now there is no evidence of a charger or any wires, creating the image of true wireless. It almost looks like a magic trick.

It’s nothing short of awesome and once I get a device which charges wirelessly, I’ll definitely be doing this.

It’s a shame that my generation, people who are still at university, try and go for a job or career where they want to make the most money they can. In the modern world we live in, we can nearly do anything and make money out of it, so why try and do something you don’t enjoy just to make a little more money. If you find something you enjoy doing, whether you’re paid for it or not, money will come naturally. People will recognise your skills and recognise your passion and there will always be a way to make money out of it.

A great example of this are YouTubers. Most of the big YouTubers these days had no clue they could make money from their videos, they made videos because they enjoyed it. There videos were so appealing that they created an audience. Google then comes to those popular YouTubers and asks them if they’d like to be in a partnership program which pays them to continue making videos – the thing they enjoy doing most. This applies to a lot of things, whether you be a blogger, a designer or a developer.

Most Mac users will have some sort of sleep functionality enabled, it preserves the life of your screen, battery life and a lot of other components in your Mac. However if you’re someone who leaves their Mac for long periods of time to do something like video rendering or anything else, this app may be useful.

Wimoweh is an app which allows you to prevent your Mac from sleeping when running certain apps. It puts a little icon in the task bar, from there you can choose which app will prevent your Mac from sleeping. It also allows you to set a time limit so it’s very useful.

Wimoweh is completely free and is in BETA so it’s not perfect. But from what I’ve seen, it seems to be working fine for me.

A little icon with your Facebook messages simply floats on top of everything else and can be moved to anywhere on the screen.

The Chat Heads feature did come over to iOS, but with the limitations iOS has, it doesn’t work just anywhere. It’s limited to the Facebook app.

However there is now a Cydia tweak to fix all that. MessageBox is a Cydia tweak which allows you to have Chat Heads anywhere you like and it works like a charm. It’s completely free and should be available on the BigBoss repo.

Jokes aside, one thing that annoys me about the iPhone camera is that shutter sound which you can’t turn off. There are no options in the settings app allowing you to turn off the shutter sound.

The only way to actually turn off the shutter sound is by switching the mute switch to the mute position. Try it now.

It’s a bit silly how Apple didn’t put an option for it in the settings, it’s an annoying sound. I’d understand if it was the sound of the actual shutter itself, but it’s not, it’s a fake recorded version of it.

On rare occasions an iPhone or iPad can simply stop responding all together. No piece of tech is completely perfect. If you ever come into the situation of a frozen iPhone or iPad here is the procedure to get it to reboot.

First press and hold the sleep/wake button at the top, then right away, press and hold the home button. You’ll need to hold the two buttons down for a while until the Apple logo appears. Your device should then be rebooting.

A few weeks back I recommended Cubby, a service which allowed you to keep files in sync purely through LAN. The only downside was that it was a paid service. (I wish I hadn’t paid for it now)

BitTorrent has just released a free tool which allows you to share unlimited files between machines completely free. By unlimited, I mean the amount of storage your machines actually have.

So if you’re like me and use two Mac’s regularly, an iMac at home and a Macbook Air on the go – you’ll want to keep your files in sync between the two machines. You simple download the BitTorrent Sync app on whichever machines you want to sync, pair them up, choose a folder and start putting files in it to start syncing.

They make it clear that your files are never stored in the cloud and are encrypted so your files will always be secure and private.

There are a bunch of other useful features too.

One-way synchronisation allows you to sync files from one machine to another without the other being able to add files or delete files from your original computer.

One-time secret allows you to sync files for 24 hours. So if you want to sync files for a limited time only you can use this.

Files can sync via LAN or over the cloud, providing both machines are connected to the internet. It’s a brilliant and free way to keep files in sync between various machines which I’ll be using from now on.

If you’re a freelancer or run a web design agency, most of you may think you’re selling website. That you’re selling website design, development, online shops to people or businesses. You’re doing it wrong.

Want to make more money from your web design skills? Don’t sell website design or development – sell business tools.

When a client comes to you to make them a website, they don’t actually know what they really want (well most don’t anyway). Most clients will think, “I want a pretty looking website where I can sell my products or services”. What they actually want is a way to make them more money, to sell more products and get their business out there to a bigger audience. Their website just isn’t a website, it’s a business tool which helps them make more money.

Don’t ever sell the technology. Your websites may be WordPress based but don’t ever tell your clients the technology you’re using – they don’t need to know, unless they specifically ask. That’s what you’re there for, to handle all the technical bits they don’t have a clue about.

Let’s use one of my own examples.

A client came to me asking for a website – a simple e-commerce store where they wanted to sell their apparel. They also wanted a blog where they could connect social profiles such as Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest.

I asked to see their business and the goods they sell to get a feel of what the business is all about.

I asked questions such as:

How regularly will you be updating your catalogue? Is it once a week, once a month or once every few months?

How will you be getting the word out about your regular catalogue updates? Email newsletter?

Do you have a dedicated blogger/social media marketer?

I would then go into suggesting other services they may need. Such as SEO, logo design, identity packages, photography…etc.

In the end I didn’t just sell a website which sells apparel. I also sold content management training, copywriting training, blogging training, social media training, product photography training, email templates, email training, SEO services, logo design, business card design, letter head design, invoice design and a few other services.

Because of all these different services I sold, I was able to charge a hell of a lot more than I would have just for website design. And I clearly stated all the way through that it’s a business tool – not just a website any 14-year-old in his basement could make. This tool would become an essential part of the clients business, just how their suppliers were an essential part of their business, just how the Royal Mail was an essential part to delivering their goods…you get the idea.

So next time you acquire a new client, sell business tools, not just a website. It’s all about the wording.

If you’re a designer or work in the digital creative industry, you’ll have definitely heard of pixel perfection or similar terms. The meaning behind this is designing literally to be pixel perfect.

If you’re an upcoming designer, learning the ins and outs you may find this PDF very useful. Even the experienced out there may find this useful.

Pixel Perfect Precision is a PDF produced by ustwo and they’re giving it away for free for anyone to download and read. It’s a 106 page guide which goes through everything you need to know to be pixel perfect – from the very basic and obvious, to the fine little details which you may have never even thought about or noticed. Don’t worry, it’s not a boring guide with 106 pages of text – it’s heavily image based with very short and concise descriptions, perfect for those who want to learn quick.

I’ve been doing design work for a few years now, but this PDF still provided me with tips and tricks which I never knew of. It’s definitely worth downloading and keeping in your resources folder.
