Mailbox, the very popular email app for iPhone which was bought by Dropbox shortly after their success, has at last come to the iPad. And as you’d expect, it’s pretty awesome.

As you’d expect with, the iPad version is just as good, if not better than the iPhone version. With the larger screen, there is more information being showed at once. You get the awesome dual-pane view, on the left is your email list and on the right is the email.

Everything is pretty much the same from the iPhone app. Although I’m still not a huge fan of the UI and the font – but the main thing is that it works brilliantly. Mailbox has been designed to make your email list like a to-do list, helping you sift through emails super quick.

All we’re waiting for now is a desktop and Android version.

Microsoft want a piece of Apple’s marketshare in the tablet space and they’ll do whatever it takes to get some. Recently they’ve been going on a tirade against the competition when it comes to their gadgets and this new ad is directed right at Apple.

Microsoft’s new ad shows off Windows 8 running on a ASUS tablet, next to it is the iPad. They try to show how the Windows 8 tablet is more superior than the iPad, showing some live widgets, apps running simultaneously and how Powerpoint is more powerful than Apple’s own Keynote. Most importantly shown is the huge price difference between the two tablets – which is no doubt a very good tactic.

Google Now is a great feature of Android Ice Cream Sandwich, allowing users to carry out search and other activities completely by voice. It came over to iOS where it was also a great hit.

Google showed off a type of Google Now for Chrome last week at their I/O event, they’re calling it Conversational Search. This allows you to search by using more natural sentences and words – instead of a standard set of words. Well Conversational Search has just come over to Chrome in the latest update.

How To Get Conversational Search

You’ll need the latest version of Chrome, v27. To see if you have that version you’ll need to head to “Settings/Help”. There you should see the version you have. My version number was 27.0.1453.93. If you don’t see that try and manually force an update.

Then head over to the Google homepage, hit the microphone icon and you should see a large red microphone appear. Start voice searching away!

I was having a bit of trouble with it though. I keep getting “No Internet Connection” when trying to search, but there were some times it was working. So it may just be that it’s not fully ready yet, but it is partly working.

Wacom are known for their very popular graphic tablets which aid designers when it comes to creating stuff. But now they’re expanding and releasing apps.

Bamboo Loop is a new app from Wacom. It’s a brand new messaging app – a market everyone seems to be fighting for. But this messaging app is very different from many others, this has more of an arty touch. It allows you to play around with pictures to add your own style.

Wacom are going for the “pictures are worth a thousand words” tactic here. They want people to send unique to each other instead of text. It’s an interesting tactic. Who knows if the app will be successful because others have tried doing this but not got very far.

The app is beautifully designed. In true Wacom style, it has a gorgeous UI which is a joy to use.

It happens every year – some random designer creates the next iPhone concept and everyone except us tech enthusiasts believe it.

The iPhone 6 concept has been making the rounds on Facebook, with it having over 150,000 likes and the comments flooded with people saying how amazing it is. The average consumer just doesn’t have a clue, when they see a video like this put together they instantly think it’s the next iPhone. I had a friend which genuinely asked me if I had seen the next “iPhone 6 with a projector and holographic keyboard’ built-in – he actually believed it was real. He isn’t the only one, I told some other friends to watch it and they believed it too.

There’s no ignoring the popularity of the iPhone camera, the three devices which have taken the most pictures on Flickr are all iPhones. It’s just so handy having such a powerful camera in your pocket, available whenever you want.

With the quality of the camera on the iPhone getting better with every generation, some are turning to the iPhone to take over dedicated cameras and make an art form out of it. Instagram is full of photographers where all their pictures are taken with iPhones and they’re stunning, you’d never expect the kind of results you see.

Some like to take it a step further and add additional accessories to their iPhone to make their photography even better. One very popular way is to add additional lenses and OlloClip is probably the most popular lens add on for your iPhone. They’ve been doing it since the iPhone 4.

OlloClip were kind enough to send me a unit all the way from the states for me to review.

The OlloClip consists of three lenses – a wide-angle, fish-eye and macro. These lenses can completely change the kind of photos your iPhone can take, literally taking them to another level.

The fish-eye gives you an approximate 180-degree field of view. It’s actually so wide that sometimes your fingers which are holding the iPhone can end up in the pics. The wide-angle gives you double the field of view you’d achieve with the standard camera. The macro gives you 10x magnification and allows you to get super close to your subject – you have to unscrew the wide-angle to get to the macro.

The quality of the OlloClip is superb. Even though it’s mostly made from plastic it’s very rigid and has a lovely finish – depending on the colour you choose. It comes with a little carrying pouch which doubles as a micro-fibre cleaning cloth, so you can clean your lenses if needed from fingerprints and dust.

It simply slides on over the camera. At first I was a little worried that the plastic would scratch my iPhone but thankfully it didn’t. It’s been designed to have a nice curved and smooth finish so it easily slides on and doesn’t leave a mark. It sits pretty rigidly on the iPhone so it won’t just fall off but can very quickly be taken off. They got the tightness perfect.

It won’t fit over any cases. It’ll only fit on naked iPhones.

To give you an idea of the field of view you get, I’ve included a gallery below with the standard, wide-angle and then fish-eye. You can clearly see how much of a difference the lenses can make. As expected though, there is distortion around the edges of the photo. They do add a very dramatic effect though.

The macro lens is pretty phenomenal. It can get so close that it can show details which the human eye can’t see. You’ll need to centre your object carefully so you get it in focus though.

Overall I was very impressed by the OlloClip. The lenses add a whole different dimension to your iPhone camera. It enables you to take pictures which are pretty phenomenal and makes you think differently too. You’ll want to take pictures which you wouldn’t have been able to achieve with the standard camera.

Kingdom Rush, one of the most popular tower defence games on the iPad has come over to Android. I’ve covered Kingdom Rush before on the site and went as far to say it was the best tower defence game I’d ever played on the iPad. The graphics, the levels and overall quality of the game is amazing.

It’s great to see the game come over to Android. I highly recommend it to anyone who is into tower defence type games, you won’t regret it.

There’s no denying that Bang & Olufsen make some of the best looking entertainment systems available. The quality and detail which goes into each product is astounding, but with that of course comes their very high price tags. The prices are usually so high that only the wealthy will afford such systems.

Bang & Olufsen have just announced a new sound system which is cheaper than a lot of their other systems, but still priced highly compared to the competition. The BeoLab 14 is their new 4.1 (comes in 5.1 too) sound system which is designed perfectly for the average home. Most of their other sound systems are huge and would be way too powerful for your average home.

The BeoLab 14 may be the best looking home sound system available right now. It’s going to be retailing at £2,500.

Are you a Nexus 7 owner? Do you have the notification light you see above? I bet you don’t because I know my Nexus 7 doesn’t.

The screenshot above comes from Google’s new promo video for Hangouts. It shows a notification for a Hangout and with that seems to come a new notification light – very similar to the one on the Nexus 4.

It looks like the design is staying relatively the same, which isn’t a bad thing. The Nexus 7 has a nice design overall anyway and it’s a very good size. Most likely Google will update the quality of the outer shell and the tech inside. Hopefully we’ll see a higher resolution screen, a more powerful CPU and a lot more storage space.

Google have yet to announce the new Nexus 7 but with it being shown off in this video, it must be coming very soon.

If you’ve been a user of Google’s products, you’ll probably know of all the chat services they had. They had so many it was so hard to keep track and it was a mess. Google have now sorted out this issue by releasing Google+ Hangouts.

Hangouts now unifies everything, putting everything under one umbrella. It allows you to have one-on-one or group conversations involving photos, emoji, videos and calls – all for free.

Hangouts is completely cross platform, it works on Android, iOS and the web. Messages stay in sync between all devices, so if you read a message on one device, it’ll show as being read on another.

This is Google’s attack on services like Apple’s iMessage and WhatsApp. But Google beat iMessage by being multi-platform and it beats WhatsApp by being free so Hangouts is probably the best free messaging and calling service available right now. All you need is an internet connection.

Google I/O is one of the most popular tech events of the year. It’s where Google usually make some major announcements about new products, existing products and general information about the company itself.

Not everyone can make it to the exclusive event because it’s in the US and the ticket prices are very high – they’re targeted at developers alike because they’re the ones who will benefit most from the four day event.

Today is Android day, where they will most likely announce a new Nexus tablet, hopefully an improvement on the Nexus 7. They will also most likely go through upcoming Android updates and what we should expect.

Android users will already know of MIUI and it’s popularity on the OS. I was in the Android scene when MIUI launched and it was a huge hit. It brought a lot of style to the then bland Android OS. Thankfully Android has come along way since then.

MIUI has now come over to iOS in the form of a Winterboard theme. And as you’d expect, it looks absolutely stunning. All the default icons for iOS have been changed to now have a minimalistic flat style – it’s brilliant and different from what others have to offer.

It doesn’t just offer icons. It also offers customised versions of the iPod app, the SMS app, phone app and a lot of the general UI, such as the buttons, transitions…etc.

This has got to be one of the most beautiful themes available for iPhone right now, it’s just sublime.

Now you probably want to get this theme on your iPhone, here’s how.

How To Install MIUI Theme on iOS

MIUI is optimised for the iPhone 5. It will run on any other devices which run iOS 6. It does not support iPad.

To get started you’ll need to add another repo to cydia – http://cydia.myrepospace.com/imiui – go into the repo and just install it. Then go to Winterboard and enable the theme.
You can also manually install the theme if you wish – full theme zip.

How To Get MIUI Lockscreen

If you’d like to have the MIUI lockscreen like I have (check out the pics above), you’ll need to do some more tweaking which can be a bit overwhelming to beginners. So please follow this if you’re comfortable with playing around with root files on your device.

1. First you’ll need to download JellyLock (BETA) from Cydia, it’s free.
2. Download the JellyLock customisation file. Unzip it.
3. You’ll need to then access your device root files and navigate to ‘/Library/Application Support/JellyLock/Contents/Resources’.
4. Go back to your unzipped JellyLock zip. Go to ‘themes/default’. Take all the files in there and copy to the folder you just navigated to on your device.
5. Enjoy!

The best thing about MIUI? It’s completely free. Most other major themes that I’ve covered on UltraLinx such as Jaku and Kiwi are paid.

BBM has been an exclusive messaging platform on BlackBerry since it’s launch. Now though, Blackberry have announced that it will be coming over to Android and iOS later this year.

Blackberry have planned for BBM to come over to the two rival OS’ this summer and will offer text and photo messaging. Additionally at a later date, they will also include screen sharing, voice and video calls. All of these services will be free of charge.

It may be 5 years too late for Blackberry. BBM requires you have a PIN which you have to send to a friend, which then has to enter that in their BBM app. This is long-winded process compared to WhatsApp which simply requires you have a number hooked up to your account, if a friend has WhatsApp too, you can start chatting instantly. With WhatsApp claiming they having such a large active user base, which they’re claiming is bigger than Twitter’s, they own a massive chunk of the mobile instant messaging market.

BBM will have to compete with the likes of WhatsApp and iMessage which are a lot easier to use and setup. There are also a ton of other free messaging apps available for iOS and Android so I doubt BBM will have much impact at all. This may just be another desperate move by the company which is losing customers at a phenomenal rate.

There are lots of Cydia themes available for iOS but I only like to cover the best – Kiwi is one of them. Kiwi is a brand new Cydia theme which launched just this week.

Kiwi has over 100 custom icons and it covers all the default iOS apps. It has a customised version of the notification centre, lockscreen, music player, messages and phone dialer. If you have Auxo, the icons for that will also be changed.

I’ve published posts on Jaku and Circles before, those themes have a very unique style, drifting away from iOS’ glossy style. If you like the default iOS gloss, Kiwi will be perfect for you. All the icons follow the same glossy style but they’re a lot more detailed and quirky. Though the messages app in this theme has a flat design – but I personally think it’s awesome.

This is another one of my top recommended Cydia themes, including Jaku and Circles.

The Nokia Lumia 925 is Nokia’s new flagship device which is running Windows Phone. This time it’s moved away from the unibody polycarbonate design and instead got a new aluminium band round the outside. The back is still made from polycarbonate.

This new device comes in at a thickness of 8.5mm, much thinner than the previous 10.7mm thick Lumia 920. It has a 1.5Ghz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and a 4.5-inch OLED display (1280×768). The camera on the back is a 8.7-megapixel PureView branded camera, including optical image stabilisation and a new lens setup made completely from glass.

It’ll be available across the UK and EU. No confirmed pricing but it will be available next month (June).

Having recently invested into a new monitor which rotates between portrait and landscape, I found it tedious having to keep jumping into the system preferences to change the screen orientation.

I found a little app, only 80kb, which sits in the taskbar. From there, you can quickly change screen orientation for however many displays you have hooked up to your Mac. It’s a lot quicker than having to keep going into the system preferences.
