Based in Norway, the hotel has floor to ceiling windows for panoramic views of the landscape. The interior has a very minimalistic styling, with dark colours, clean carpets and very few items of furniture.

Everyone, hold your horses – Flickr has now just got an epic redesign.

I’ve always been a huge fan of Flickr and stood behind it ever since I came across it around 6 years ago. However a lot of others abandoned it and for good reason, the site just wasn’t keeping up with current design trends and features.

Flickr is now back and up for a fight. First thing you’ll notice is a complete redesign – nothing like the previous site. Photos now pretty much make up the whole site, there is barely any white space – just how a photography site should be.

All users now get one whole terabyte of free space – let me say that again, one terabyte. That’s 1000GB worth of free space. That’s enough space for just over 530,000 pictures at 6.5 megapixels each. I’m sure people don’t even take that many pictures but just incase, Flickr wants to have you covered.

Now head over to Flickr, sign yourself up and start uploading pictures!

If you’re a photographer you’re probably using Flickr or 500px to host your pictures. Both platforms are a great way to show off your pictures and gain much deserved exposure for your work. But if you’re interested in self-hosting your photos, Lychee may be a great option.

Lychee is a beautiful self-hosted photo management system. There are many benefits to this. The design will always stay the same, no corporation will try to change anything around. There’s no ignoring the popularity of the iPhone camera, the three devices which have taken the most pictures on Flickr are all iPhones. It’s just so handy having such a powerful camera in your pocket, available whenever you want.

With the quality of the camera on the iPhone getting better with every generation, some are turning to the iPhone to take over dedicated cameras and make an art form out of it. Instagram is full of photographers where all their pictures are taken with iPhones and they’re stunning, you’d never expect the kind of results you see.

Some like to take it a step further and add additional accessories to their iPhone to make their photography even better. One very popular way is to add additional lenses and OlloClip is probably the most popular lens add on for your iPhone. They’ve been doing it since the iPhone 4.

OlloClip were kind enough to send me a unit all the way from the states for me to review.

The OlloClip consists of three lenses – a wide-angle, fish-eye and macro. These lenses can completely change the kind of photos your iPhone can take, literally taking them to another level.

The fish-eye gives you an approximate 180-degree field of view. It’s actually so wide that sometimes your fingers which are holding the iPhone can end up in the pics. The wide-angle gives you double the field of view you’d achieve with the standard camera. The macro gives you 10x magnification and allows you to get super close to your subject – you have to unscrew the wide-angle to get to the macro.

The quality of the OlloClip is superb. Even though it’s mostly made from plastic it’s very rigid and has a lovely finish – depending on the colour you choose. It comes with a little carrying pouch which doubles as a micro-fibre cleaning cloth, so you can clean your lenses if needed from fingerprints and dust.

It simply slides on over the camera. At first I was a little worried that the plastic would scratch my iPhone but thankfully it didn’t. It’s been designed to have a nice curved and smooth finish so it easily slides on and doesn’t leave a mark. It sits pretty rigidly on the iPhone so it won’t just fall off but can very quickly be taken off. They got the tightness perfect.

It won’t fit over any cases. It’ll only fit on naked iPhones.

Sample Pictures

To give you an idea of the field of view you get, I’ve included a gallery below with the standard, wide-angle and then fish-eye. You can clearly see how much of a difference the lenses can make. As expected though, there is distortion around the edges of the photo. They do add a very dramatic effect though.

The macro lens is pretty phenomenal. It can get so close that it can show details which the human eye can’t see. You’ll need to centre your object carefully so you get it in focus though.

Overall I was very impressed by the OlloClip. The lenses add a whole different dimension to your iPhone camera. It enables you to take pictures which are pretty phenomenal and makes you think differently too. You’ll want to take pictures which you wouldn’t have been able to achieve with the standard camera.

It comes in three different colour combos – red, white and black.

The vision that many people have about minimalism is that it should be completely sterile, white and basically nothingness. Minimalism isn’t about taking everything away, it’s about having just what you need, nothing more, nothing less. This beautiful minimalistic penthouse in Athens displays that with a mixture of textures and colours which are all pretty muted. It has a very Japanese zen styling to it which is very much the ‘thing’ right now.

Android users will already know of MIUI and it’s popularity on the OS. I was in the Android scene when MIUI launched and it was a huge hit. It brought a lot of style to the then bland Android OS. Thankfully Android has come along way since then.

MIUI has now come over to iOS in the form of a Winterboard theme. And as you’d expect, it looks absolutely stunning. All the default icons for iOS have been changed to now have a minimalistic flat style – it’s brilliant and different from what others have to offer.

It doesn’t just offer icons. It also offers customised versions of the iPod app, the SMS app, phone app and a lot of the general UI, such as the buttons, transitions…etc.

This has got to be one of the most beautiful themes available for iPhone right now, it’s just sublime.

Now you probably want to get this theme on your iPhone, here’s how.

How To Install MIUI Theme on iOS

MIUI is optimised for the iPhone 5. It will run on any other devices which run iOS 6. It does not support iPad.

To get started you’ll need to add another repo to cydia – http://cydia.myrepospace.com/imiui – go into the repo and just install it. Then go to Winterboard and enable the theme.
You can also manually install the theme if you wish – full theme zip.

How To Get MIUI Lockscreen

If you’d like to have the MIUI lockscreen like I have (check out the pics above), you’ll need to do some more tweaking which can be a bit overwhelming to beginners. So please follow this if you’re comfortable with playing around with root files on your device.

1. First you’ll need to download JellyLock (BETA) from Cydia, it’s free.
2. Download the JellyLock customisation file. Unzip it.
3. You’ll need to then access your device root files and navigate to ‘/Library/Application Support/JellyLock/Contents/Resources’.
4. Go back to your unzipped JellyLock zip. Go to ‘themes/default’. Take all the files in there and copy to the folder you just navigated to on your device.
5. Enjoy!

The best thing about MIUI? It’s completely free. Most other major themes that I’ve covered on UltraLinx such as Jaku and Kiwi are paid.

There are lots of Cydia themes available for iOS but I only like to cover the best – Kiwi is one of them. Kiwi is a brand new Cydia theme which launched just this week.

Kiwi has over 100 custom icons and it covers all the default iOS apps. It has a customised version of the notification centre, lockscreen, music player, messages and phone dialer. If you have Auxo, the icons for that will also be changed.

I’ve published posts on Jaku and Circles before, those themes have a very unique style, drifting away from iOS’ glossy style. If you like the default iOS gloss, Kiwi will be perfect for you. All the icons follow the same glossy style but they’re a lot more detailed and quirky. Though the messages app in this theme has a flat design – but I personally think it’s awesome.

This is another one of my top recommended Cydia themes, including Jaku and Circles.

It’s available on Cydia now for $2.99.

Micro Four Thirds may be the thing to bring back Olympus cameras, but boy do Olympus know their way when it comes to styling. The new E-P5 has a look directly from the 60′s, and that isn’t a bad thing. The looks are the only retro thing about this camera, what’s packed inside is one of the best Micro Four Thirds cameras.

The Olympus E-P5 has a lightning fast 1/8000S shutter speed, the first Micro Four Thirds camera to achieve such a feat. It has a five-axis stabilisation system to help you take blur free shots and has a very fast autofocus. The sensor is a 16-megapixel LIVE MOS sensor which runs with Olympus’ TRUEPIC VI image processor. There’s a large tilting 1037k dot LCD touchscreen on the back. Just like a DSLR it also has an array of buttons and wheels to help you configure the camera to your needs. With many cameras now coming equipped with WiFi, this one has it too, allowing you to control the camera remotely from a smartphone.

The price for the body only in the UK is going for £899. No word on what kits will be available in the UK yet.

I’m contemplating on getting one myself but the GF6 is £400 cheaper and comes with nearly all the same features, except the shutter speed and fantastic styling.

I’m a huge FIFA player and I’m sure many of you guys in the UK and EU are too, think the US is not so much. FIFA is one of the most popular games which comes out every year and it’s by far the most popular football game.

The only problem is that FIFA is made by EA, which has been voted the worst company of the year. Everyone despises EA and you can see why when you play their games.

FIFA is no exception. The interface on the game is absolutely horrific. Jittery animations, randomly organised menus and overall very sluggish. Their web interface for the game is just as bad.

Rodrigo Bellão, a designer from Brazil has taken the time to redesign the FIFA interface in his free time. It’s a stunning piece of work. He’s made the UI with a very minimalistic style. Everything is super organised and just very clean in general. EA definitely need to hire this guy.

Ever wondered how much work goes into just the front cover of a magazine? Well Macworld have created a video which shows you just how much.

They covered three main areas, photography, photoshop and design. They first have to take a picture of the iPhone, and a hell of a lot of equipment is used to get it perfect. They then move on to Photoshop, cutting the image round perfectly to get just the iPhone. Finally they move on to the design of the cover itself, designing the layout and where everything should go. There is a ridiculous amount of detail and fine-tuning which goes into each process, it’s pretty phenomenal. I’m just glad I don’t think I’m weird anymore when designing stuff, fine tuning things by the pixel.
