OS X Yosemite Icons and Mavericks Icons Side by Side

Apple is giving their desktop operating system a brand new look with OS X Yosemite. The new interface is cleaner and flatter. It also features transparent windows materials and new typography as well as redesigned icons.

Below you can see a brilliant side-by-side comparison of the new application icons prepared by Jim Tanous. Chances are you will quickly recognize those on the left as they come from OS X Mavericks, the system your Mac is currently running on. Yosemite icons are on the right and look very different. However similar in size, layout, and proportions, their glyphs have been simplified to fit the new design language of the system.

With iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, Apple is bringing their mobile and desktop experience closer than ever. It is good to see the company care not only about features and software integration, but also visual consistency. Many Yosemite icons bring to mind their counterparts from iOS 7 and we’re happy to say good-bye to the faux leather and archaic ornamentation.
