Freelance designers have some benefits and some downsides to their work and lifestyle. The freedom is amazing, but the stress can really build up and can be dangerous, or even detrimental to your health. Therefore, it is important to stay creative and balance your life as a freelance designer and developer. In this article I share some tips to stay healthy, peaceful, and relaxed as a freelancer or entrepreneur. Balance is the key to staying in check with your work.

After working for a while in the same place, it can be frustrating. You will get sick of the same routine and the same workspace. This is why it is important to change it up every once in a while. Try going outside, or take a trip to the local coffee shop. Working away from home can be inspiring and will keep you super productive if done right.
If your work is making you feel a bit dull or too repetitive it is important to switch it up. Try making a cool new side project or possibly a redesign of a popular website, it has some amazing benefits when marketing yourself as a designer. Not to mention it is the perfect way to clear your mind and get inspired.
Exercise is my favorite way to stay creative and clear my mind. Whether it be a nice swim in a local pool or lake, or a long run on the countryside, exercise is the best way to reduce stress. You can fully clear your mind and will be enthralled with the exercise so it will be good for you. This is my favorite way to get rid of creative block.
As much as staying productive is important, sometimes you just can’t. So it is important to find ways to relax and rejuvenate. I find that a hobby such as photography or sports can help. Others like movies and tv shows. I love watching some indie movies or an undiscovered tv show. It can take your mind off of work and will help you stay creative.
Right now you are probably thinking, how the hell will new work help me stay creative? I know, I know, it seems like an odd tip, but here me out. When working on a new project, sometimes I feel the need to design, but something other than my freelance work. So why not take to creating some cool design resources? It can be a great way for designers to make extra cash. Not to mention switching up what you are designing or developing helps a lot and will keep you creative. Oh, and look at this. This student earned 15k in his free time designing digital resources. If that’s not enough motivation, I don’t know what is!
Often times, when working solo I get lonely, and sort of bored over all. However; this doesn’t have to be the case. Take the time to start a cool side project with a friend. It can lead to bigger and better ventures and will also make you super creative. Whenever I work with friends or colleagues I always find that I am much more productive and inspired to do amazing projects.
It’s not too hard to stay creative these days, it’s all about balancing work and play, and being healthy. Never risk burnout, is it really worth your life just for a new design job to be complete?
