Today was the US launch of the Nintendo Wii U and it also marks the begining of the next generation of consoles. The Wii U has the luxury of being first but the real test will be when the Xbox 720 and Playstation 4 makes it into our living rooms. The Wii U isn’t just a sound that an ambulance makes. It’s the successor of the family centric Wii console that came out with a bang and later ended up being a novelty. This was mostly due to the motion gaming available on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
Nintendo has taken a new perspective on console gaming for their brand. Nintendo hopes to position itself as an all-in-one device, a combining games, entertainment and social interaction across two distinct screens. The aforementioned second screen is a gamepad. Its a game gear like device that functions as a controller and a second screen. It sort of reminds me of the VMU (Virtual Memory Unit) that was on the Sega Dreamcast. For example, on the Dreamcast the VMU allowed you to pick your play on NFL2K and the gamepad on the Wii U functions as a radar on Call of Duty Black Ops 2.
I was lucky enough to have a friend who got their hands on a Nintendo Wii U 32GB Deluxe and decided to share the experience with you. Check out the high res photos and Unboxing Video below.
